WTF! Clients shock me when they request…

Table shots.  Like, really?!  What year is this?  It’s usually the parents who want this – and I’ve definitely lost a job or two over my stance on those. Just. Can’t. Do. It.

If I could get shoes made out of a Finao Leather I’d be rockin’….

Ooooh, that’s a tough one!  So many good options.  I think anything from ‘the nines’ would be awesome – maybe some chunky platforms in ‘sex and candy’!

IMAGE COVER TEMPLATES

template-update (2)

IMAGE COVER TEMPLATES HAVE BEEN UPDATED THIS YEAR.  MAKE SURE YOU’RE USING THE CORRECT TEMPLATE FOR YOUR COVER IMAGE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR ORDER.

This is IMPERATIVE to make sure your order is counted as a HOLIDAY ORDER.  All orders expected for holiday delivery MUST be submitted COMPLETE AND CORRECT before the product deadline.  Incorrect cover images will delay your order and could disqualify it from being included as a holiday order.

Not sure which to use? This should help:

Example 1: You’re ordering an 8×8 playBOOK with 12 leaves/24 page-sides and you want a Photo Wrap cover.

Use the playBOOK photo wrap template for an 8×8 playBOOK with 12 leaves (NOT 24 leaves). You select the “LEAF COUNT” at the beginning of the order. So, if you selected “12 leaves/24 sides”, you’ll refer to the template for 12 leaves, NOT 24 (as 24 is the number of page sides).

Go to PRODUCTS > PLAYBOOK > PHOTO WRAP > select “Download playBOOK photo wrap template kit”

The most recent templates at this time are from a .zip file named “finao-playbook-photowrap-10262012.zip”  Please DOUBLE CHECK that this is the correct folder you are pulling your templates from!

The template to use in this example should be named “pb-8×8-10-13lvs“.

Here’s a pic for reference:

Download the playBOOK photo wrap template kit .zip folder and open it, select your size (in this case 8×8) and now select your LEAF count (1/2 the total page-sides).

Example 2: You’re ordering a 14×10 horizontal ONE with an Armour metal image cover.

For specialty covers like ICE, Armour, Erotika, Bebbalicious and Canvas Panel that only have an image on the front cover, you do not need to worry about the leaf count as you do for the Canvas Wrap or the photo wraps for the other album lines.  BUT, you do need to use the appropriate template for your album’s size and orientation.  You also must FILL the entire template.

Go to PRODUCTS > Finao ONE > SPECIALTY COVERS (find your cover, in this case it’s Armour) > select “Download ICE/Armour template kit”

The most recent templates at this time are from a .zip file named “finao-ice-armour-09102012.zip”  Please DOUBLE CHECK that this is the correct folder you are pulling your templates from!

The template to use in this example should be named “ia-14×10-horizontal”.

Here’s a pic for reference:

Example 3: You’re ordering a 10×15 vertical ONE with a Canvas Wrap cover and 15 leaves/30 page-sides in the medium page style.

Just like example 1, you will choose the appropriate template based on the album size AND the number of LEAVES. BUT, since the ONE offers two page thicknesses, you’ll ALSO need to account for the page style you are choosing, Thick or Medium, as this will affect the thickness of the spine area on the design.

Remember: # of leaves = 1/2 of your total page-sides.  So you will choose the folder of FULL CANVAS (canvas wrap) templates for Medium Pages > then the folder of 10×15 vertical templates with medium pages > and then select the 10×15 Vertical template for 14-20 leaves.

Go to PRODUCTS > Finao ONE > SPECIALTY COVERS (find your cover, in this case Canvas) > select “Download Canvas template kit” (includes both Canvas Wrap and Canvas Panel templates).

The most recent templates at this time are from a .zip file named “finao-canvas-10042012.zip”  Please DOUBLE CHECK that this is the correct folder you are pulling your templates from!

The template to use in this example should be named “10x15v-med_14-20lvs”.

Here’s a pic for reference:

TOO MANY OPTIONS!?!?!?

Got a wee bit sidetracked last week working on the super intensive project of updating cover designs. My apologies for missing last week’s Fashion blog but, all in all, it was time well spent and look for loads of new cover designs to be added to our Finao ONE cover design guide in the near future.

With that in mind, I heard many times from folks at several of the recent conventions that Finao has SO many options. “It’s confusing!” and “I can’t show all these options to my bride.” and even “I can’t send my bride to your website to view all the options.”      -.O

You are absolutely right! We don’t want your bride on our website and you should not be showing your bride EVERY possible thing you can do in an album.

Huh wut?

You heard (er…read) me correctly. “Well then what the heck am I supposed to do?”, you may be thinking. Here’s the deal. As I have heard Christine say many times, by the time a bride gets to a photographer, she has tried on, tasted and sampled hundreds of items. She doesn’t want to think…don’t make her think. It could get ugly. So how do you compete with things she can taste, touch and feel?

Chances are, she has a good idea of what she already wants for her wedding or event by the time she gets to you. It’s your job as the photographer to make her photography as special as everything else. She probably has colors already picked out, an idea of flowers, maybe even cakes. Find out how YOU the photographer can fit into that. It’s not just taking the pictures anymore. Have her bring in examples of things she has already picked out. Create a fashion board with her of things she likes. Check out The Dessy Group for some very inspirational fashion board ideas.

By finding out WHAT she has already chosen, YOU, the photographer, can work WITH her to give her something special. Something created JUST for her. Now, do you think she might be more likely to pay a little extra for that kind of treatment over the photographer that offers just a plain black album? If it were me, I’d buy into it. ;)

The other benefit about approaching client’s in this matter is that you are still able to give them choices…albeit EDITED choices. Let’s take a look at an example from The Dessy Group .

So, here is our client fashion board example and it’s pretty obvious what colors feature prominently into her theme. Based on that I pulled out materials from the leather swatch kit that I thought would compliment her existing materials.

I selected some basic materials as well as some materials I thought might make nice accents. I even threw in the dark Magical Mystery Glass sample as a possibility. Looking at what we have now…11 materials is much more manageable then an entire swatch kit of colors that will have no meaning to her AND could easily distract her away from the task at hand. Unless she changes her colors at a later date, don’t bother showing her the rest. You have still managed to give her several possible choices AND kept her to the task at hand. BRILLIANT!

You can always throw out there ideas of the possibility of adding in a nice metal, acrylic or canvas image cover. They are just another way of personalizing HER final album to HER wedding. Part of the key is to get her to LOVE her album concept as early in the game as possible. Make it part of your initial selling points and your consultations. Everyone else is treating and pampering her, why aren’t you?

The more you, the photographer, can educate yourself on products and options, the more you can do this. It shows you care and your client’s will FEEL like you care for them when you are able to present them with a photography package tailored just for them. THAT is the sort of treatment people pay extra for AND will return and refer people for.

Just something to keep in mind. :)

Happy Friday all.

Finao meets the notorious Bettie Page

It hasn’t slipped past our attention that boudoir has made a comeback. Our Image Preview Boxes and Image Portfolios have been highly popular during this resurgence but what about taking boudoir up a notch? What about a boudoir album?

For our fashion inspiration this week, we look to the ultimate pin-up girl…the notorious Bettie Page.

THE BETTIE PALETTE: 1. Dark & Bronzy (Magical Mystery Glass – upgrade cover)  2. Racing Stripes  3. El Tigre  4. Kitty Kitty  5. Red Light District  6. Passion  7. Something Wicked  8. Suspicion  9. Sunday Shoes  10. Optimism  11. Lusterin’ Hot  12. Queen for a Day

The Bettie Palette focuses on fun with fur (from the Zumanity collection) & texture (suedes from the Urban Legends collection) and just a hint of fetish (those shiny patent leathers). Mixing and matching glass-smooth patent leathers with furs and suedes to create visual (and even physical) sensuality is the key.

SPECIALTY COVERS:

Want a cover that gives a hint at what’s inside? The dark & bronzy Magical Mystery Glass option is truly the ultimate peep-show cover. A dark clear plexiglass cleverly hides the image beneath leaving only curiousity to passers by.

Let’s take a look at some Finao samples that fit into our Bettie Palette:

But it doesn’t stop there, the combinations are pretty endless but some other favorite concepts are these:

Finao has the materials to help you take those popular boudoir sessions outside the (preview) box.  When you are ready to take the leap, we will help you create your very own “notorious” album line so don’t be afraid to explore those urges…see you next week.

Ciao for now,

Creative uses with CU29

Welcome back to another edition of Fashion Fridays. We are continuing this week with more of the recently released Mixed Bag collection. For this edition we will be looking at CU29. Now, does anyone know where we got the name CU29? It’s the name for copper on the periodic table and we found it appropriate for this coppery metallic leather. CU29 has a delightfully warm tone and works well with many of our other leathers as both a main material and accent and can vary from earthy to funky depending on how you would like to pair it up with another color or texture.

THE PALETTE:

1. Copenhagen  2. Chiara  3. Junkyard Dog  4. Biker Chic  5. Suspicion  6. Miami Ink  7. Optimism  8. ‘Shroom  9. Firefly  10. Drifter  11. Dulche de Leche  12. Kitty Kitty  13. Painted Pony  14. Racing Stripes  15. Bling Dynasty  16. Magical Mystery Glass – Dark & Bronzy  17. Ipinema  18. Olea Branch  19. Rainy Day Woman  20. Havana  21. Scotch Pine * Not shown but also a good color: Opaline

When we found CU29 at a leather show we immediately thought it would be the perfect mate to go with another new material,l Bling Dynasty (from the Zumanity collection).  As some of you may remember from our PPA and WPPI shows earlier this year, we had the above two concept samples made up. These images actually show the shimmery quality of the Bling Dynasty and CU29 better than our material scans ever could. This is just another reason to invest in actual swatches. We make every effort to portray our colors as accurately as possible online, however, they never truly capture the quality 100% of the time.

As mentioned previously, CU29 is a rich warm coppery brown and can be paired with a similar color for a tone on tone accent or something contrasty and fun like a fur from the Zumanity collection. Since it is a metallic leather, we have found pairing it with a non-metallic or texture works best.1. Bling Dynasty accent  2. Chiara accent  3. Drifter accent  4. Dulche de Leche accent  5. Firefly accent  6. Kitty Kitty accent  7. Painted Pony accent  8. ‘Shroom accent  9. Racing Stripes accent

CU29 also works well in smaller doses when used as an accent instead of a main. Its copper metallic finish can add just a bit of ZING to an otherwise plain album, pair it with a green for a nice “earthy” look or mate it with a lighter color like Opaline for a visual pop.

10. ‘Shroom main  11. Drifter main  12. Firefly main  13. Havana main  14. Ipinema main  15. Junkyard Dog main  16. Miami Ink main  17. Opaline main  18. Rainy Day Woman main

DONT’ FORGET ABOUT SPECIALTY COVERS:

I think CU29 would go swimmingly with the Magical Mystery Glass (Dark & Bronzy option) if you are looking for something that is a bit more mysterious. It could also go well with an Armour, ICE or Erotika cover depending on the colors in your chosen image. Stick to something warm and bronzy and you are sure to have a hit on your hands.

Well, thanks for stopping by for another edition of Fashion Fridays. We hope we helped get those creative juices flowing a bit. We will finish up Mixed Bag next week by looking at the last new leather, Masqueradiance.  Get ready to get some romance on with that one so stop back next week.

Ciao,
